The Origin And Development Of Car Seat Belts

Jun 02, 2021

Seat belts existed before the invention of the automobile. In 1885, horse-drawn carriages were widely used in Europe. At that time, seat belts were simply to prevent passengers from falling off the carriage. By 1910, seat belts began to appear on airplanes.

In 1922, sports cars on the racing track began to use seat belts. In 1955, Ford cars in the United States began to use seat belts. Generally speaking, the seat belts of this period were mainly two-point seat belts. In 1955, the aircraft designer Niels invented the three-point seat belt after he went to work for Volvo Cars. In 1963, Volvo Car Corporation began to register Niels' three-point car seat belts and assemble them on self-produced cars. In 1968, the United States stipulated that all front seats of cars should be equipped with seat belts. Developed countries such as Europe and Japan have successively formulated regulations that car occupants must wear seat belts. The Ministry of Public Security of my country issued a notice on November 15, 1992, stipulating that from July 1, 1993, all drivers and front-seat passengers of small passenger cars (including cars, jeeps, vans, and mini cars) must use seat belts. . Article 51 of the "Road Traffic Safety Law" stipulates that when a motor vehicle is running, the driver and passengers shall use seat belts in accordance with the regulations. Currently the most widely used is the three-point seat belt.
